How to use diapers

If parents-to-be learn everything about changing diapers before birth, the process will be easier once babies are born, as babies need 10 or more diapers a day. Knowing the proper diapering routine will make this job even easier.

Changing a diaper may seem complicated at first glance. But expectant mothers and fathers will find it easier to keep their baby-to-be clean and dry if they practice on toys.

Before you start changing diapers, gather a few supplies:

diaper
hot water and cotton balls (for babies with sensitive skin) or clean clothes or diaper wipes
ointment/gel/oil for the prevention and treatment of rashes

Wiping

Gently wipe your baby from front to back using a damp cloth, cotton balls, or baby wipes (never wipe from back to front, especially for girls, or you could spread bacteria that can cause UTIs). You can lift your baby's feet by the ankles to lower them.

After you finish wiping, dry your baby with a clean towel and apply an anti-rash ointment.

When using diapers:

Open the diaper and slide it under your baby while gently lifting your baby's legs. The back part with the adhesive strips should be level with your baby's belly button.

Bring the front of the diaper between your baby's legs and onto his stomach.

Bring the adhesive strips around and fasten tightly. Be careful not to stick the tape to your baby's skin.

A few additional tips:

If you find any marks on the baby's legs and back, then the diaper is too tight. Next time, wear a looser fit. If that doesn't help, your baby is ready for a larger diaper size.

If your baby's umbilical cord has not yet fallen off, fold the waist of the diaper down to keep the area dry. Continue to do this for a few days after the cord falls off to prevent irritation.

Always wash your hands thoroughly after changing your baby's diaper to prevent the spread of germs.
